Self-Employment Statistics Increase Rapidly Within Crisis

By

Self-Employment Opportunities

Have you ever heard of Elance.com? It’s one of the greater sites for self-employed online business people that offer their services for a fee and can also outsource any aspect of their web needs.

Run into an article that was posted within the Elance site and I found  very interesting the fact that there is an increasing percentage of  ”corporate – company” people, who have become their “own people”, meaning that decided to launch an online business career as a solution to what we call “CRISIS”.

Read on the full article that I came across and you’ll understand what I mean. In times of financial insecurity and with the word ”JOB” being not the most standard choice for anyone, the time has come for highly self-motivated people to invest in themselves, get educated and pave their own path to their personal and financial liberty. Who can you trust these days, except your own precious and decent self?

Straight from Elance on my blog, as I always share the wealth when I see it.

The U.S. labor market continues to mystify economists. U.S. GDP (gross domestic product) is growing briskly, but the Labor Department reports 20,000 jobs were eliminated last month alone. How can employers keep pace with increased demand for goods and services without adding to the payroll?

The not-so-simple answer: they can’t. Businesses are hiring; they simply have to given the current rate of economic growth. But the kind of workers they are hiring and the way in which they are hiring them has changed.

Consider this piece of data from the Labor Department’s recent report: the number of self-employed Americans grew by 126,000 in the last quarter. Add to that another telling statistic: the number of temporary jobs has increased by 250,000 in the last quarter. (The Labor Department consistently under-reports the rate of temporary job growth.)

Our so-called jobless recovery is nothing more than an illusion. What we are experiencing is a long-predicted structural change in the job market. In the span of a single generation, we’ve gone from “company man” to being our own man or woman, thanks, in part by, to advances in computer and telecommunications technology.

And it was made possible by changing attitudes toward work. Roiled by globalization, the rapid pace of technological change, and a boom and bust economy, many of today’s workers have found security in the idea of free agency. Job uncertainty has bred a worker that is more resilient, adaptable and entrepreneurial than his predecessors. People have traded in careers for gigs.

Employers, facing the uncertainty that comes with a downturn, have seen the advantages of a flexible workforce. With the Internet, the search for talented employees is no longer limited by geography.

At Elance, there has been a steady increase in the number of jobs posted on our site. According to the Online Talent Report, more than 100,000 businesses listed 300,000 new jobs last year. Last month alone, the number of jobs posted grew by 30 percent from the previous month.

And that trend isn’t exclusive to high tech hubs like Silicon Valley and New York City. Our data shows that there are online and self-employed workers in all 50 states. Demand for certain types of jobs like mobile applications programmers and social media management is far outstripping supply. So far, small businesses have been the first to look for talent online. This year, we expect larger enterprises to follow suit.

I would love to take the bull by the horns and be my own boss, I have longed to do so for quite a few years but I am scared as I am a single mum of two and at least I have security the way I am right now, if not job satisfaction.

Very good post. If you are going to be self employed one of the most important things you will need to have is confidence in your self. If you do not have that you will fail. I believe if your going to take the plunge and be your own boss you must dive with no fears or worries.

Interesting article. Being self-employed will take a lot of risk. You just have to be prepared and take all the possibilities. Think of the worst scenarios and how to overcome it. In the end, if you business will skyrocket in the market, you can say that it\’s all rewarding.

I started my business this year after leaving my previous company. I started up because of the effect the downturn was having on the previous company. Massive risk but the best thing I have EVER done. My confidence and motivation has improved massively. I am not earning as much as I was on before but I don\’t care. I did wonder how I was going to get certain tasks done but there are many sites like Elance which are there to help small businesses. For anyone thinking of going self employed, just do it.

Exactly. More people choose to work for themselves with the current economic condition. It’s not a bad thing though because it’s actually giving them more freedom to work whenever they want to.

It is quite true I believe that that we have become one man or one Woman Company with the increase in the technology. Now we can single handedly go on with work along with the help of machines. The statistics you have showed are pretty interesting, especially a certain appeal during a period of post recession times In order to be secure.

In today’s market, it really seems like the only person you can rely on for a job is yourself. Even if it’s not a full-time job, making extra money via self employment and the internet is a smart option. Though, the internet is a competitive market. If you’re a novice to it, which is the best feel for a slice of success to get into?

Thanks for this post – I found it while looking for stats on rising rates of self employment. I left my corporate job in 1992 and have never looked back. Taking responsibility for your career is sometimes scary, but the rewards are tremendous, because you become very, very resourceful.

I tried Elance once to make some extra money, but every skill I had was outbid by all of my competitors who were outsourced and could do the job for half of what I needed to charge.

Being Self employed is good, however it comes with challenges and risks that are not in taking a paid job.

  25. information technology jobs (1 comments) says:

IT Jobs are being outsourced and offshored at an alarming rate. I was in corporate IT for over 20 years until I got sick of depending on a big corporation. Are you ready for a change? Find out about a career where YOU are the only limit to your income potential, you still get to use your IT skills, annd you set your own hours.

  26. Sam from SAPJobs (1 comments) says:

Unfortunately, working from home doesn’t suit all jobs or sectors and from experience although it allows you to have a more flexible schedule there are also downsides to it. The lack of contact with colleagues and people in general and also the element of distraction. You need to be focused and self disciplined if it is going to work for you. Recently, the UK government suggested people work from home to avoid travel chaos around the 2012 Olympics, it will be interesting to see the development of that.

    Thanks,
    Sam
